Farewell UGST 1000…

As my first semester here at UNT comes to close, I am reflecting on the past 4 months. It is sad to say goodbye to this wonderful little group of us “undecided” kids, all sharing the common unsure nature of our future careers and paths. I will take away from this class and the semester that it is very important to get involved and NETWORK! I think networking is key in any field and is a very valuable piece of advice for us all to follow in our futures but should also start thinking about now. I have learned lessons in the importance of time management and learning how to utilize the large amount of free-time we now have as college students. I also learned that college life is what you make it, you’ve got to get out and experience new things…and I think I need to take my own advice here… I think I have matured some in this past semester, learning how to be on my own and having WAY more freedom and independence than I ever had at home. I do have an idea of a direction I may pursue in terms of a major but I am still not sure. I plan on looking into TWU’s occupational therapy program as well as possibly a Physical Therapy Assistant program at a local community college. What’s next for me? Well, I guess we’ll see where the wind takes me.

Farewell UGST 1000…you will be missed…

Spirituality

Today in class we had a  guest speaker come and talk to us about spirituality. Being Catholic, I feel I am both religious and spiritual. My faith is not an overwhelming factor in my day-to-day life, however, it is definitely present. I try to do the best I can and be the best person I can be according to my values and morals as well as the Bible. To me, spirituality is something that guides me on an inner path enabling me to discover the purpose of my being or to find the deepest values and meanings by which I choose to live.

I really enjoyed the presentation today and was very glad to learn about some resources around campus that I plan to pursue.

RTN Project & Group Collaboration

There have been a lot of group projects and assignments in this class. I personally am not a fan of group projects, I would much rather prefer to do an assignment individually. I think group collaboration is very helpful in many aspects, but large projects are made much more difficult as a group in my opinion. I know it teaches us to work as a team and divide roles equally and whatnot but it makes it more of a struggle figuring everything out with a group rather than learning what the project is supposed to teach us.

In a group project, my role depends on my group members. If I have a group where everyone is very involved, on top of things and is in charge of themselves, I take more of a backseat and let someone else lead the group and get everything together. On the other hand, if my group members are not very involved and aren’t paying attention to details of the assignment I am usually the one to step up and take the leader position. I am usually concerned about my grade and feel much better if I can get everything together myself in order to ensure that it is competed properly and in a timely manner.

Our RTN group is doing okay, compared to some other groups at least. I have done my part and my other group members seem to be on the right path to having everything completed by the deadline. To communicate and organize we usually talk about the project in class, and through group texts. It seems to have worked fairly well although we could definitely be more organized and on top of things.

Hopefully everything turns out the way I expect it to and we get the project done in an efficient and timely manner.

Diversity

The dictionary defines the word diversity as “the condition of having or being composed of differing elements; the inclusion of different types of people (as people of different races or cultures) in a group or organization”. To me, diversity is individuals coming together no mater their ethnic background, religion, or any other defining term. I feel diversity is very important because it shows that no matter how different people may be, they are coming together in unity. They all share something in common that brought them together no matter how much their backgrounds seem to push them apart.

Judgement based on looks, ethnic background, social class, religion, etc., is far too common in today’s society, yet we all do it. Like in the video, most people who would see that man on the street would make snap judgments about him and his character and his morals. Without even trying to get to know him, he would not be given the chance to explain himself or give others an idea of his values and beliefs.

I don’t really know what cultural group I would identify with. Being a white, middle class American I feel I am in the “majority”. Sometimes it is hard to know where I fit in, especially at this stage in life. I am Catholic so I identify with Catholics and other Christians. There are many negative views associated with Catholicism and sometimes when people find out that that is the religion i practice, they make snap-judgments.

Like everyone else, I do tend to judge a book by its cover, but seeing the video really put it into perspective. I judge a persons character based on their morals, values, and how they treat others. The most important thing is to really get to know a person before you put a label on them or judge them too soon. It is important to stay open-minded and give people a chance.

Did You Know? 3.0

This video was shocking, which I’m sure it is meant to be. It really got me thinking about the type of things that were presented in a whole new light and presented facts that I never would have expected were true. I had no idea the amount of technology there was and what is expected in the future. The information presented was definitely scary. It is kind of disturbing to think that there will be computers that can do more than a human brain….and in 2049 it is expected that a computer will exceed the computational capabilities of the entire human species.

These facts and figures do change my idea of majors and career opportunities. I am reminded of the fact that there are many jobs available for a particular major, and even then, the major someone chooses most likely will not be the field they end up starting their career in. It actually left me more confused and torn about what I want to do with my life than before…while I was already quite confused. I am still far off from deciding what I want to do. It is very strange to think that I may end up in a job that isnt even created yet, but that makes it all the more difficult to know what to be studying in school. Technology is advancing so rapidly that it is causing people to have to catch up and constantly be chasing the “newest thing”.

Response to Personal Security

After reading the lesson presented by Melody about personal security and safety, I have a better understanding of personal security threats and prevention. After the recent robberies around campus, I have been a lot more aware of my surroundings. I tend to walk alone but I try to stay in well lit areas and I try to walk near other groups of people so I do not seem like I am alone. I have never used the UNT e-ride, but if I felt the need to use it, I am glad it is available to me. I could improve my safety precautions by familiarizing myself with the locations of the  emergency towers,as I only know where a couple are located.

Online security is a very serious issue. I was not aware of all of the different kinds of online scams and security issues but I am now better educated on them due to this presentation. I feel I am fairly safe when it comes to online security. I run virus scans and updates on my computer every few days, I do not put my personal information on websites that seem unsafe, and I use different passwords for different sites. Phishing scams fill my email inbox, but I am very aware of them and delete them right away. I also do not put anything on Facebook that I wouldn’t want my parents or future employers to see. I understand that anything that is released on the internet is permanent, public, and exploitable. I think there are far too many people that disregard this fact and put way too much information on the internet.

Overall, I think this presentation was very helpful, especially the video, and I am better equipped to control my personal and online safety.

Emotional Health

By Andrew Hern and Lindsey Crase

At the end of this lesson, learners will be able to identify emotional health issues, understand their emotional needs, and learn techniques for coping with emotional stress.

After learning facts about emotional health through the prezi and watching the video on how to improve your emotional health, do you think you are emotionally healthy?

What did you know about emotional health before seeing this presentation?

What changes can you make in your life to achieve or maintain emotional balance?

What techniques can you incorporate into your daily life to reduce stress?

Why is emotional health just as important as physical health?

How do your relationships affect your emotional health?

Reflect and answer these questions in a 250 word blog post.

Bonus: Power Poses

I have always been someone who is a little more reserved and avoids drawing attention to myself. I most likely lead many people to believe I am less in control or have little power. By standing, sitting, and gesturing with low-power poses I likely do not show confidence and control in many situations. This is something that I have gotten better at but I could still use some improvement.

In my speech class during my senior year of high school I improved immensely on my public speaking skills, nonverbal clues, and confidence. I used to be very shy and introverted, but I think I have improved greatly and much of the improvement can be accredited to my speech class and teacher. It really is not too scary if you are educated on your topic, confident, and prepared.

After watching the YouTube video on power poses, I realize how important nonverbals are. Like the video pointed out, if you engage in powerful posing before an interview or speech, you will feel much more powerful and confident and your audience will see it as well. It is important to remember not to overpower you audience or the person you addressing to avoid appearing over-confident and cocky. Power poses before going into an interview as well as body language during the presentation can make or break you. Incorporating the tips and tricks presented in the video into ones daily life will show great improvement on their confidence as well as peoples response to their presence.

Body language can reveal more about a person than anything else, so it is important to recognize them in others as well as to control your own when interacting with others.

Managing My Money

Today in class we learned about the Student Money Management Center on campus and a few tips and tricks about money management. While hearing about all of the statistics and facts about college students and money, I got a little scared. Money management became very real and is now something I feel like I should think about more often.

I have always been very good about saving my money and not spending on things I know I don’t need. I have quite a bit of money saved, but that is not all there is to good money management. There are other aspects to managing your money efficiently than just having some in the bank. Budgeting is a necessary aspect of managing money and I realize I may need to work on. At the moment I don’t have very many expenses.  Most of my schooling and housing costs are currently covered by scholarships and student loans. Right now I am not tight on money, but I know that in the very near future I will have to be worried about paying back loans and that worries me. I can probably benefit from any of the Student Money Management Center workshops. I think I would get the most out of either “Finding Your First Apartment” as I will be living off campus next year, or “Budget Like A Billionaire” because come on, who doesn’t want to be a billionaire?

The activity in class helped me realize that money and value of certain items is very subjective. It is important to really think about an item you are about to buy and if it really has a value that matches its price. This presentation on money management caused money and future budgeting to become a very real issue and encouraged me to take control of my money now rather than later.
